The Bahrain Bay Shaza Hotel is one of the Shaza Brand Hotels that expresses in a contemporary
design led environment, the aesthetic art of living and values of the Middle East and North African
region, where they are positioned in. The Brand’s commitment to sustainability is being showcased
in the Bahrain Bay Shaza Hotel through it’s pursuing of a LEED Certification from the United States
Green Building Council (USGBC).
Green Technologies Sustainability Consultants were commissioned in this regard to facilitate the
Green Design and Certification Process on behalf of the Client and the Hotel’s Project Team. As a
result of a Preliminary LEED Assessment carried out by the Consultants in participation of the Client
and the Project Team it was decided that the Bahrain Bay Shaza Hotel would pursue LEED
Certification under the USGBC’s LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED NC)
Version 2.2 Rating System due to the Owner, fitting out more than 50% of the occupied spaces.
The Preliminary LEED Assessment also revealed that the Project is capable of targeting a LEED
Silver rating upon incorporating the necessary sustainability requirements within the Project’s
Design and Construction Phases with subsequent documentation.
Specific Sustainability Goals of the Project are as follows;
- Energy savings of 20-30%
- Water savings of 40-50%
- Superior IEQ for building occupants
> Thermal comfort – Maintenance of an indoor temperature in the range of 24±2 0Cand
relative humidity between 50% & 60%.
> CO2 monitoring and control for air quality improvements
> Day lighting and views
- Possibility of using renewable energy sources for powering selected equipment (Solar PV,Solar thermal).
- Integrate buildings with the site ecology.
- Use of environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals in the entire project, which in turn
provides cleaner environment for the building occupants.
- Use of environmentally friendly interior materials such as paints, adhesives, sealants, carpet
and interior furniture.
- Recycling of construction waste to avoid it from landfills.
- Waste recycling during occupancy.
- Use of recycled/recyclable products in the building construction.
- Best operating practices from day-one
