THE RAINFOREST ECOLODGE, DENIYAYA, SRI LANKA

The Rainforest Ecolodge is located in Deniyaya, Sri Lanka, on the Sinharaja Division of the Enselwatte Estate owned by Mathurata Plantations and the site borders the Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main features of the Project includes the
Ecolodge consisting of 14 accommodation units in addition to a public area including a restuarant, bar, reception and lounge area, visitor
centre and research station. Its design is deemed to be a model, embodying the highest standards of sustainability and is due to be
constructed with the utilization of the most sustainable construction material and methodologies.
This Project has a high potential of achieving the status of a “Nett Zero Energy Project” provided the Project Team strives to install an
onsite Renewable Energy Plant; in this case, a Dendro Power Plant that will serve to furnish all energy requirements of the Project. In
addition to the significant contribution this step will make, to the reduction of Carbon Emissions, that would help mitigate Climate Change
impacts, it will also result in long term financial benefits due to low operational energy costs. The installation of such a Plant will also help
achieve a minimum of 2 (Two) additional LEED points which could make a significant improvement to the LEED Rating the Project has
targeted.
The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Rainforest Eolodge (Private) Ltd., in association with the International Financial Cooperation – South
Asia Enterprise Development Facility (IFC – SEDF) of the World Bank Group has requested Green Technologies FZCO to facilitate the
process in order to obtain a LEED Green Building Certification for the Project.
The Project is currently in the Construction Stage, with all foundations with regard to the main public areas having been completed. The
project is due for completion in September 2009.
Sustainable Features of the Project

The fundamentals of sustainable development, would make it mandatory for the Development to comply with the following prerequisites,
irrespective of it pursuing a LEED Green Building Certification or not;

• Construction Activity Pollution Prevention
• Water and Wastewater Recovery
• Fundamental Commissioning of the Building Energy Systems
• Minimum Energy Performance
• Fundamental Refrigerant Management
• Storage and Collection of Recyclables
• Minimum IAQ Performance
• Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) Control

In addition to the above prerequisites being complied with, the sustainability targets for this development would be to pursue the Client’s
requirement of a LEED Green Building Certification adopting commercially viable technologies. This would result in;

• Potable Water Savings – by 40% or more
• Better Environment for Building Occupants in the form of,
     ƒ Maximum Daylight and Views
     ƒ Better Indoor Air Quality
     ƒ Thermal Comfort
ƒ Controlled Indoor Chemical and Pollutant Sources
     ƒ Visual Comfort
• Use of Environmentally Friendly Housekeeping Agents
• Use of Environmentally Friendly Application Agents such as
• Paints and Coatings
• Adhesives and Sealants
     ƒ Carpet Systems
ƒ Composite Wood and Agri-fiber Products
• Use of Recycled / Recyclable Construction Materials
• Construction Waste Recycling in Order to Divert from Landfills
• Use of Locally Available Materials in Construction
• Building Operations Waste Management
• Light Pollution Reduction
• Controlled Quality and Quantities of Storm-water
• Optimized Energy Performance by 30%

Exclusive Sustainability Goal for Rainforest Ecolodge
An exclusive target for this development is to meet the criteria of a Nett Zero Energy Building. This would not only result in the highest
level of sustainability with regard to energy but would also make the development self sufficient and more in terms of energy
consumption.
The achievement of this target would likely result in the Rainforest Ecolodge achieving the status of the First Nett Zero Energy Hospitality
Project in the World. This status would be the strongest marketing tool for the completed development, after its advantageous location
and setting.
